“Spring Deck Season Is Here! Almost”
Thinking about the warm days of spring?
Well, most are after dealing with months of cold and snow. The season is almost here, it’s time to get ready for the warm days ahead. “What’s that you say?” You don’t have a nice big Custom Deck to sit out on to enjoy the Spring season? Well now is a great time of the year to get plans in motion to have “Extreme Exteriors & Contracting“ build that Custom Deck you’ve always wanted, but first, there are a few things to think about before we start building.
#1 What size deck do you want?
You want to know how much deck will work for you.
Most homeowners we build for have a deck that runs the back width of their house and extends outward a minimum of 10 feet. Now if you have a house that is 30 to 40 feet wide, 10 feet may be a bit narrow and you may want to consider adding 5 to 10 feet more. Some have a Sunroom or bump-out on the back of the house and have 15 feet of width that works well with 10 of extending deck towards the backyard.
This is one way to figure out how much deck you need and have some fun doing it.
Get a tape measure and a garden hose or rope. Measure out what you think will work for you and your family’s needs, then mark it off using the garden hose or rope.
Now the fun part, fill that space with what you want to put on the deck. Table, Chairs, Gas Grill, stereo speakers, end tables, patio couch, whatever you feel you would use on the deck. Get it all set up the way you want it and then use that space for a weekend. See how it feels, is it too congested? Is there enough walking area? Is there too much open area? Just get the feel of the area. If it works, you know how much deck you need, if it’s too small or too large, make adjustments now before your deck is built. “We want you to be happy with your decision”.
#2 What size is your yard?
Now that you know what size deck, you also need to take into consideration the size of your yard.
If your yard is medium to large, you shouldn’t have too much trouble with a larger deck. But if your backyard area is small, having a large deck could be a hassle to work around if you need to do yard maintenance or maybe have a fence or gate too close constricting exits from your deck and yard. Also, some counties or HOA’s (Homeowners Associations) have setbacks.
A good rule to follow is to use the footprint of your home. Don’t go past the side of your house, unless you’re planning a wraparound deck. Make sure you check building and zoning codes and setbacks with your county and HOA. “Or just ask us and we can do that for you.”
#3 Covered or Not to Cover? That is the Question.
Having a deck is great but it can get hot when the sun starts beating down on it.
There are many options to choose from when considering covered decks. Permanent, Cloth, pergola, or an awning. “We can build permanent covered decks free standing or attached, screened-in options as well.”
We’ve had customers, have us build their deck and then come back and add a covered screen room. No Problem!
Adding retractable awnings are also a good way to go if you don’t want a permanent covering. Just use the ole Google and find your awning company, there are many good ones to choose from. Add temporary sailcloth shades, they come in many shapes, colors and sizes.
#4 materials for Decking and rails.
There are so many great options to go with, in today’s world.
Wood, the most common material and the most affordable. Although wood is the most common, it’s not always the best choice. The one big problem we have with wood decks on the east coast is, ‘Wood Rot’.
If you are into treating your deck with stains or paints to maintain and prolong its life, good, then wood is the way to go. Yes, we use treated wood but if you don’t have a maintenance plan, even the best treated high-quality wood will eventually rot and need to be replaced.
PVC, Composite, and Aluminum decking and framing materials have come a long way in the last 10 years. You could build a deck now that would outlast the home itself, if built right and with little or no maintenance. And if you think Aluminum decking gets too hot or can’t look like real wood, think again. Aluminum will actually stay cooler than other deck materials and look just as good.
You could also have a mix of materials, wood or composite decking, and steel or aluminum handrails. The possibilities are endless and we don’t want to bore you with endless examples. “We have plenty of product samples and brochures to share with you to get your Dream Custom Deck plans in motion.”
